How do I identify a research gap in the literature?

Read the limitations and future work sections of the twenty papers closest to your interest. Researchers say there what they could not do and what should be done next. Collect those statements, look for the one that several papers name independently, and check whether anyone has since done it.

The limitations section is the most underread part of a paper and the most useful one for this purpose. Authors are required to state what their study could not establish, and they are usually more candid there than anywhere else. Twenty papers give you twenty honest accounts of where the evidence stops.

Read them together rather than one at a time. A limitation that appears in one paper is that paper's problem. A limitation that four independent teams name is a property of the field, and a gap defined by a shared limitation is much harder to dismiss than one you noticed alone.

Then check whether it is still open. Search the specific limitation as a phrase, look at the papers citing those twenty, and check preprint servers, since a gap this visible often has someone working in it already. Finding that out now is a good day, not a bad one.

The other productive route is the seam between two literatures. Fields that study the same thing under different names rarely read each other, and a claim treated as settled in one is often contested in the other. Those seams are where original work is easiest to justify and hardest for anyone to have already done, because doing it requires reading in two places at once.

Once you have the gap, write it as an argument rather than as a summary of what you read. Lingard calls the missing piece a knowledge deficit and recommends a Problem-Gap-Hook structure: state the problem, specify the gap, then say why closing it matters. The working image is a map, where you arrange the established findings so that the white space is visible, instead of trying to make the map complete. A review that turns into a laundry list of everything published makes the topic look settled, which is the opposite of what your thesis or dissertation needs it to do (Lingard, 2018, Part I, p. 47).

What are the different types of research gap?

Five recur. Evidence gaps, where findings conflict. Population gaps, where a result was never tested elsewhere. Methodological gaps, where one design dominates. Theoretical gaps, where no framework explains the pattern. And practical gaps, where research and practice have diverged. Naming which kind yours is sharpens the statement.

It also decides your design, because each kind implies a different study. An evidence gap calls for a design that can adjudicate between the conflicting results. A population gap calls for replication in a new context, which needs a stated reason the context might matter. A methodological gap calls for a different design and a justification for why the dominant one is insufficient.

The type also tells you how strong your gap is. Population gaps are the easiest to find and the easiest for an examiner to describe as incremental. Evidence and theoretical gaps take more work to establish and carry more weight once you have.

To sort your papers into these types, read them against each other rather than in sequence. Pautasso's sixth rule is that a review should not merely summarize the publications, it should identify methodological problems, the main areas of debate, and the outstanding research questions (Pautasso, 2013, p. 3). Those three headings work directly as a coding scheme for your notes. Treat the advice for what it is, a set of practical recommendations drawn from the author's experience with roughly 25 literature reviews written as a PhD and postdoctoral student, not a tested finding about what graduate students should do (Pautasso, 2013, p. 1).

How do I tell a real gap from a topic nobody publishes on?

Ask why the space is empty. A real gap has a reason it stayed open: a method only recently became available, a dataset was closed, two literatures never met. An empty space with no such reason usually means the question was tried and abandoned, or nobody considers it worth answering.

There is also a publication-bias explanation worth ruling out. A question can look unstudied because the studies that answered it found nothing and were never published. Searching preprint servers, dissertation repositories, and conference abstracts sometimes turns up exactly the null results that would have closed your gap.

Counting papers is also a weak test on its own, because a full literature can hide a gap and a thin one can hide a dead end. Pautasso points to research on the impacts of climate change on plant diseases as a case with more literature reviews than primary research papers (Pautasso, 2013, p. 2). Munn and colleagues describe the opposite pattern in several fields, where the problem is definition rather than volume: Schaink and colleagues found competing definitions of patient complexity, Hines and colleagues found substantial variation in how bronchopulmonary dysplasia is defined, and Callary and colleagues found the methods for measuring hip-replacement wear varied enough to warrant a call for standardization (Munn et al., 2018, p. 4). A gap can therefore sit in evaluation, validity, generalizability, or classification, not only in absence.

The test to apply before committing years to it: can you say in one sentence what would change if the gap were filled? If the honest answer is that a slightly more complete literature would exist, keep looking.

The last step is to match the gap to a method that can close it. Lingard makes this explicit, asking you to characterize the kind of gap and then establish coherence between that gap and your study methodology (Lingard, 2018, Part I, p. 49). The choice of review type follows the same logic. Munn and colleagues distinguish scoping reviews, which map what evidence exists and generally do not require risk-of-bias assessment or formal synthesis, from systematic reviews, which use explicit methods, mandatory critical appraisal, and synthesis of the individual studies (Munn et al., 2018, p. 5). They also note that a traditional review does not necessarily use an a priori protocol or a reproducible search, which is why it carries less weight as evidence that a gap is real (Munn et al., 2018, p. 6). If you cannot name the design that would answer your question, you have a topic rather than a gap.
