How do I write a research gap statement?
Three sentences. What the field has established, what it has not, and why the missing part matters. The first sentence credits the work, the second names the absence precisely, and the third gives a reason to care. Anything longer usually means the gap is not yet clear to you.

The three-sentence shape works because it matches the way a reader evaluates a claim of novelty. They want to know that you understand the field, that you have identified something specific it lacks, and that filling the lack changes something. Missing any one of those makes the statement fail in a predictable way.
A worked example. "Mentoring programmes reliably improve early-career retention, a result replicated across three national samples. What these studies share is a focus on formal, institutionally assigned pairings, and none has examined the informal mentoring that most participants report actually using. If informal relationships carry the effect, current policy is subsidizing the wrong mechanism."
Notice what that does. It credits the literature rather than dismissing it. The absence is narrow enough to be checkable, which also means it is falsifiable, and being falsifiable is what makes it credible. And the third sentence gives a consequence outside the literature, so the gap is not merely bibliographic.
The same shape has a name in the methods literature. Lingard calls it Problem-Gap-Hook: state the problem, name what remains unknown, then give the reason the unknown part warrants your study, and asks that the review around it map the known work so a white space becomes visible rather than inventory everything you have read (Lingard, 2018, Part I, p. 47). Pautasso reaches the same place from a different direction, arguing that a review should surface methodological problems, live debates, and outstanding questions instead of summarizing publication after publication (Pautasso, 2013, p. 3). The practical translation is to replace "Study A found X, Study B found Y" with a sentence that names the unresolved issue itself, an inconsistency between findings, an untested population, or a limit in the available method (Lingard, 2018, Part I, pp. 47-48).
Say what kind of gap it is, and make your design match it. Lingard's point is that announcing a gap is not enough, the methodology has to be coherent with the type of deficit you mapped, so a methodological gap needs an explanation of what existing methods cannot establish and why yours can, while a gap of context or population needs the missing case named rather than the field described as under-researched (Lingard, 2018, Part I, p. 49). Lingard notes that this burden is heaviest in a well-studied area, using professionalism in medical education as the case where readers start out doubting that any more research is needed (Lingard, 2018, Part I, p. 48).
The most common failure is a gap that is really a description of your intended study. "No study has examined informal mentoring in Welsh secondary schools using longitudinal methods" is a gap defined by stacking your own design choices until nothing matches. An examiner will ask why each qualifier matters, and you need an answer for every one.
What phrasing makes a gap statement sound weak?
Absence-only phrasing. "No study has examined X" invites the answer "and for good reason". Also weak: "little is known about", "has received limited attention", and "more research is needed", all of which describe the literature without saying why the missing piece matters.
The stronger constructions carry a consequence. "This leaves open whether", "the mechanism therefore remains untested", "current guidance rests on evidence from a single setting". Each says what is at stake rather than what is absent.
What makes the stronger phrasing safe to use is a search you can produce on request. Pautasso lists the habits that make one auditable: record your search terms so the process can be repeated, keep a list of the PDFs you could not access, use reference software such as Mendeley or Papers, fix your exclusion criteria early, and read previous reviews as well as primary studies (Pautasso, 2013, p. 1). Pautasso also asks for varied keywords across several databases, naming Google Scholar, JSTOR, Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science, plus citation tracing out of the papers and book chapters you already have (Pautasso, 2013, p. 2). With that behind you the defensible sentence is "across the studies retrieved under these terms and criteria, evidence remains limited on", not "no research has examined".
Also avoid claiming to be first unless you are certain. "The first study to" is the sentence examiners and reviewers most enjoy disproving, and one overlooked paper undermines everything around it. "One of the few" costs nothing and cannot be falsified by a single reference.
How long should a gap statement be?
Three to five sentences in a thesis chapter, one to two in an article introduction. It appears more than once, so keep the wording consistent across the abstract, the introduction, the end of the review chapter, and the discussion. Inconsistent phrasing reads as an unsettled argument.
Write the canonical version once, in a file of its own, and paste it in each place, adapting only the length. Drift happens otherwise, and by the fourth draft the abstract claims something slightly different from the review chapter, which is exactly the discrepancy an examiner picks up.
Revisit that canonical version whenever your results come in. A gap statement written in year one often needs a small correction by the end, and correcting it deliberately is better than leaving four versions to disagree.
Check as well that the gap still exists. Pautasso warns that a gap closes quietly through papers in press, studies published since you searched, and older work called sleeping beauties that nobody had cited yet (Pautasso, 2013, pp. 3-4). Pautasso also sorts the terrain by how much has been published and how many reviews already exist, which decides whether a field needs a review, a review of reviews, a set of research questions, or a demonstration that more primary research is required, and his example of climate-change impacts on plant diseases is a case where the reviews outnumber the primary papers, so "more studies are needed" is an assumption rather than a finding (Pautasso, 2013, p. 2). Lingard and Pautasso agree on the principle and differ on where writers fail, Lingard on the rhetorical shape and the fit with your methods, Pautasso on coverage and keeping the search current.
