Should I do a thesis by publication or a monograph?

A monograph suits humanities work and any argument that needs sustained development across chapters. Check what your regulations permit before deciding anything.

The first thing to check is not preference but permission. Regulations differ on how many papers are required, whether they must be published or merely submitted, whether you can be a co-author or must be first author, and how co-authored work is assessed. Some institutions require a signed statement from every co-author about your contribution. Find this out in year one, since retrofitting a format at the end is expensive.

Assuming both are open to you, the honest trade is between what the thesis is for. A thesis by publication produces artifacts the academic job market reads directly. A monograph produces a sustained argument that a paper series cannot, and in fields where the book is the currency it is also the better preparation for what comes next.

The publication route has one specific advantage worth naming. A paper carrying your name counts as recognized evidence of research competence, which is why it helps most if you are heading for a PhD or a research job (Saccenti and Furlan, 2025, p. 7). That advantage is conditional. Publication is not guaranteed, supervisors sometimes do not pursue it even when the results are interesting, and the plan has to be negotiated with your supervisor before you commit to the project rather than after (Saccenti and Furlan, 2025, pp. 7-8). Ask who will be an author, what counts as your contribution, whether the regulations want papers submitted or accepted, and who finishes the revisions after you graduate.

The temperament question is real. Publication format means working to external deadlines and receiving reviewer criticism throughout, which some people find motivating and others find corrosive. Monograph format means years without external validation, which suits people who can hold their own standard and is hard for people who cannot.

A middle route exists in many institutions: write a monograph and publish two chapters as papers along the way. It carries some cost in reformatting, and it gives you most of the benefits of both.

How do published chapters get stitched into one thesis?

With connective material: an extended introduction establishing the overall question, short bridges between chapters explaining how each follows from the last, and a discussion that synthesizes across all of them. That connective writing is where a thesis by publication succeeds or fails.

The bridges do more work than their length suggests. One or two paragraphs at the start of each chapter, saying what the previous chapter established and what this one adds, turns a sequence into an argument. Without them, an examiner sees three papers in a binder.

Expect to reformat. Papers written for different journals have different conventions, and a thesis usually needs consistent terminology, notation, and reference style throughout, plus a note stating where each chapter was published and what your contribution was.

The length conventions of the two formats are far apart. Bourne calls the thesis a "kitchen sink" and the paper a concise document that should communicate the maximum information in fewer words (Bourne, 2005, p. 341). Material a journal made you cut for length often has to go back into the chapter. Bourne also records the opposing view, that publication receives too much emphasis during a doctorate, while arguing that writing for publication defines scope and supports hypothesis-driven work.

What are the risks of each format?

Publication format risks a thesis that reads as unrelated papers, and it hostages your timeline to review times you do not control. Monograph format risks finishing with nothing published, which is a real disadvantage on an academic job market that reads publication lists first.

The timeline risk deserves planning rather than worry. Submit early, choose journals with reasonable turnaround for at least one of the papers, and check whether your regulations accept submitted or accepted work rather than published, since that difference can be a year.

The larger risk under either format is not finishing. Marino, Stefan and Blackford state it directly: research is never really finished, so your job is deciding when the agreed experiments provide enough evidence for the degree, and going back to the laboratory instead of writing delays submission without necessarily improving the thesis (Marino et al., 2014, p. 1). Their remedy works for both formats. Agree a plan with your supervisor about a year before submission, review progress every few weeks, and settle structure, chapter count, and chapter length with them early (Marino et al., 2014, p. 2).

If you are writing an MSc thesis rather than a doctorate, the timing problem is sharper. Saccenti and Furlan note that an MSc project usually runs 6 to 12 months, so final analysis and paper writing often continue after you submit, while you are looking for a job or applying for a PhD (Saccenti and Furlan, 2025, p. 7). They report that papers out of MSc computational projects are not uncommon in their own group, which is a record from one group rather than a general success rate, so treat it as encouragement and not as a probability.

The monograph risk is manageable too. Extracting one paper from a monograph mid-degree is normal practice and costs less time than people fear, and it removes the worst version of this problem.
